Hola mis amigos!
We just thought we’d do a short post on our Honeymoon so far. We are now in Cusco, Peru exploring this amazing city before we head out on our Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu tomorrow morning. We can’t wait.
It was a long and tiring journey getting to Cusco – a five hour flight from LAX to El Salvador, followed by another five hour flight to Lima, Peru, an entire night in the Lima airport, and finally a short 1.5 hour flight from Lima to Cusco. Lucky we’ve travelled light and opted for carry on only for the next 7 weeks, otherwise lugging big backpacks around would have been pretty difficult. It was definitely worth the journey once we got here!
Cusco, sometimes spelled Cuzco is in a valley in the Andes Mountains. Flying in I was stoked to have the window seat once we saw the incredible mountain range. It was breathtaking! Cusco is actually at 3,400 m (11,200 ft) altitude and we could definitely tell once we were strolling along the steep streets in the historical centre. It once was the capital of the Inca Empire so there was plenty to see upon arrival yesterday morning. We were fairly exhausted by the journey (and the unsuccessful sleep we tried to get in the Lima airport…literally on the floor!) so we explored all morning and took a short siesta in the afternoon. We had a deliciouso dinner (Ben wants me to tell you he even ate a local dish of Alpaca Meatballs) and hung out at the hostel bar for a few Cusquenas (the local Cusco made beer). Our hostel is great (thanks for the tip Julia!!) and we’ve even got hot water which is a luxury at youth hostels in these parts.
Today we checked out the ruins closest to Cusco, called Sacsayhuamán (or sexy woman). It is about a 2.5 km hike up some very steep stairs to the top. The view was incredible. You could see the entire centre of Cusco and on the other side the beautiful countryside. Wow!
After exploring on the top of the hill we made our way down the hill to the city and meandered through the little alleyways and cobblestone streets.
Tomorrow we’re off on a four day trek to Machu Picchu. We are so excited! We’ll be out of contact for about five days, but will post photos once we’re back.
We’ve posted a few photos of Cusco already, so check out the gallery or Facebook.
